At the heart of the peninsula is Snæfellsjökull, a 700,000-year-old glacier-capped stratovolcano, famously featured in Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, where the protagonists discover a passage leading to the Earth’s core.
Tour Stops:
Gerðurberg: Begin with a visit to Gerðurberg, a 1 km long formation of perfectly shaped hexagonal basalt columns, a prime example of Columnar Jointing, which stretches along a dramatic cliff face.
Bjarnafoss Waterfall: Marvel at the beauty of Bjarnafoss, an 80-meter waterfall cascading down a steep mountainside, offering a stunning photo opportunity.
Arnarstapi Village: Explore the picturesque Arnarstapi, a historic fishing village with dramatic coastal views. Here, we’ll visit the Bárður Snæfellsás Memorial monument and the old harbor, rich in Icelandic heritage.
Hike to Hellnar (Optional): An easy 2.5 km (1.5 miles) hike along the coastline from Arnarstapi to Hellnar takes approximately 35-45 minutes. This walk offers breathtaking views and is suitable for all ages, including children from 5 years old.
Hellnar Village: Continue to the village of Hellnar, another traditional fishing village. Enjoy a cozy lunch at Fjöruhúsið, a seaside café known for its authentic Icelandic fish soup (other lunch options are also available).
Vatnshellir Cave Tour (Optional): Discover the ancient Vatnshellir Lava Tube, an 8,000-year-old cave formed by a volcanic eruption. The tour takes you inside the tube, where you’ll learn about the fascinating geology of the region. (Duration: 1 hour)
Djúpalónssandur Beach: Visit Djúpalónssandur, a stunning black pebble beach surrounded by towering cliffs. The beach is home to the famous Gatklettur rock formation, adding to its dramatic beauty.
Fishing Villages of Hellissandur, Rif, and Ólafsvík: Drive through these charming fishing villages, each with its own unique charm and rich maritime heritage.
Kirkjufell Mountain: One of Iceland’s most photographed landmarks, Kirkjufell, also known as “The Arrowhead Mountain” from Game of Thrones, offers incredible views, especially when framed by the nearby waterfalls.
Grundarfjörður: Visit the town of Grundarfjörður, a picturesque fishing village located at the base of Kirkjufell.
Berserkjahraun Lava Fields and Selvallafoss Waterfall: Our final stop takes us to the Berserkjahraun Lava Fields and the hidden Selvallafoss Waterfall, a local secret offering a serene and photogenic setting.
